It is physically and emotionally healthy to develop a strong sense of purpose. The state of mind you have when absorbed in accomplishing a goal is an engaged, satisfied state. Those who have learned to develop a sense of purpose are the most likely to be happy and healthy.
Finding your purpose can be a daunting task, but it is possible. What are your strengths and talents? As youngster, each of us show an affinity for something. Did you excel at art or music? These are talents and skills that can be factored in when defining your overall direction in life. Setting small, attainable goals and working toward each of them in turn will help you achieve your ultimate purpose. The choices you make each day should always move you toward your goal. Educating yourself on how to realize your dream will help you define your goal more clearly.
Give your life direction by chipping away at a list of things you want to accomplish. There are lots of principles you can take to develop something you want to work toward; it will improve your self-esteem and contribute to your overall sense of happiness.
Principles to share:
- Let your dreams open up possibilities
- Create a list of short term & long term goals
- Recognize your achievements (I)
- Make your daily activities an investment in your life bank (II)
- Do at least one thing every day that brings you closer to your goals (III)
- Try new things until something clicks (IV)
- Experience new things (V)
- Explore your spirituality and investigate a faith that appeals to you (VI)
Among few principles stated above, I'll elaborate six points.
(I) Recognize your achievements
- Although some of your life goals may not yet be accomplished, it is likely you already have many achievements already under your belt. Relieve your successes. Realize that what you have done up to this point counts and is an important part of your life's direction. Furthermore, realizing what you have already accomplished can lead you to brainstorm about new goals. Build on your successes and climb higher, using them as a strong foundation.
(II) Make your daily activities an investment in your life bank
- Having no sense of purpose is extremely frustrating and demoralizing. You get up and go to work every day, but you don't know what you're working toward. You operate on routine and memory. You may even catch yourself accidentally driving to work on weekend. Wake up and pay attention to your life! Each step you take toward fulfilling your purpose and improving your happiness is money in the bank.
(III) Do at least one thing every day that brings you closer to your goals
- Make time everyday to do one small thing that con tributes to your long term goals. If you want to run a marathon some day, start exercising. Running each day is good for your body and mind, but running for a purpose makes it more fulfilling. Every extra mile you run brings you closer to your ultimate goal of running a marathon. All long term goals can be broken up into smaller activities you can work on from the first day that you set out to achieve them. If the final destination seems too far, just start with them first step.
(IV) Try new things until something clicks
- Go outside your safety zone to open yourself to new endeavors. Pushing the boundaries of your life can open new doors. During any one of these new endeavors, you will likely meet people who will unexpectedly influence you. Live your life as if there is something to be discovered with every decision. You will later be surprised at how seemingly random decisions helped shape your purpose. Be proud and find happiness in trying new things.
(V) Experience new things
- Even if you are not sure where you are going, stay in motion. Do something outside your normal routine every day. Sticking to your same routine day in and day out provides no opportunities for new experiences. When you look at the ground while you walk, you miss the sights, sounds, and signs all around you. Treat everything you do as an opportunity to learn something new that may help inform your life and purpose.
(VI) Explore your spirituality and investigate a faith that appeals to you
- Finding your purpose ties in with whether you connect to a higher power. Spirituality is grounding and affirming because it offers rules that can help dictate the direction your life takes. Following religious traditions also connects you to a group that is acting on the same principles, working toward a common purpose. Finally, feeling connected to God and to the service of your religion will provide shelter in the storms of life.
